It started with the beat of just two drums, and before long, an entire rhythm band took shape for an afternoon jam session recently at the Annapolis Senior Center in celebration of Black History Month.

Those who weren't playing were tapping their toes and bobbing their heads in time as they enjoyed lunch or shuffled their deck for another round of cards. Some who shied away from picking up a mallet still got caught up in the infectious beat, like Justlin Thomas of Eastport, who broke into an impromptu hip-hop dance as she scooted by on her way to a ceramics class.
