Under a burning sun at the crack of noon yesterday, Ky Heinze appeared over the crest of the Spa Creek Bridge, running toward Eastport with about 125 other runners hot on his heels.

After the race, Noelle Owen, 7, of Annapolis, and her beagle, Izzy, try to win Best Smile in the Dog Day Afternoon competition. The two events raised about $2,400 for the SPCA and Eastport Elementary School’s Reading Is Fundamental program.An occasional jogger who otherwise isn't much of a runner, Mr. Heinze flew through the yellow crepe paper finish line to claim victory in this year's .05K race. "I'm in a little pain here," said Mr. Heinze, in sandals and khaki shorts, panting and gripping his chest. "I'm actually a little surprised. There were people who looked much more like runners."
