He was born in Maryland on Valentine's Day 1930 and was raised by his uncles, Gus, Dick and his favorite, Mattie Brown. During his youth, he lived with his uncles and the Brice family at Primrose Acres.

His life on Primrose Acres led him to care for horses at the Parole Hunt Club under the tutelage of "Munchie" Snyder and W.O. Siegert.
