Call it the new math. Frances Cary Lukens at 60, director of St. Anne's School of Annapolis, is only a few years older than the school she has led for 20 years, yet she still maintains the enthusiasm and positive outlook of a college freshman.

Each tiny "purse" houses a prayer penned by its maker. When she first encountered the school in '79, it was as a young mother, seeking a nice pre-school program for her oldest child, son Cary, now 32. Now, thanks to Cary, Mrs. Lukens is anticipating the birth of her first grandchild just as the 2008-09 school year begins.
