As they cut through the dense growth, the young campers could be heard whispering among themselves. One asked "Are animals in here, like bears?" Another piped up, "The only thing I'm afraid of are snakes."

Andre Neely, 10, who lives in North Carolina, stayed with his father in Annapolis this summer. He paired with Midshipman Michael Brown to spruce up the gardens at the Chesapeake Ecology Center on Clay Street.
The group wasn't exploring a jungle in a remote part of the world or the Amazon rainforest. They were in a rain garden only a few miles from where many of them live in Annapolis.
