County resident celebrates 100 years with family closePublished 01/24/09
Anne Arundel County has changed during the century Alice Gertrude "Gertie" Guy has called it home.

Alice Gertrude “Gertie” Guy, a lifelong resident of Anne Arundel County, turned 100 on Jan. 13. She said she doesn’t know how she managed to live so long, that “it was just something that happened.”"It's overgrown," she said. "There's lots of people around, but you don't see them very often." A lifelong county resident and an Annapolitan for decades, Mrs. Guy remembers life on a farm, planting tobacco and picking tomatoes. She remembers taking a horse and buggy to Galesville Elementary School - and walking the five miles home when the horse left without them. "(Growing up) goes by too fast," she said.
