Christopher Gipson of Gambrills loved the Red Cross. He hung the organization's flag on his bedroom wall. And when he lost his battle with sickle cell disease on July 3, 2008, the flag was buried with him.

The local Red Cross has dedicated July 3 to his memory, in honor of the work he did to advocate blood donations and thank donors. So he would be proud to know that the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services region has dedicated July 3 to his memory. "He had always wanted something in his name," said Cynthia Gipson, Christopher's mother. "I felt really honored, and I know Christopher was smiling, that the Red Cross thought that much of him."
