The legislation, which he will attempt to introduce at a City Council meeting Monday night, is the same as the tax cap Herb McMillan, president of the Maryland Taxpayers' Association, unsuccessfully tried to get on the Nov. 3 general election ballot as a referendum question.

If passed, it would limit tax increases in Annapolis to 4.5 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.

McMillan's petition drive fell about 2,000 signatures short of...

Tax Cap Is NOT Crippling CA - 2009-10-23 11:11:18

Overspending by the gov. is what is crippling CA, not the property Tax Cap. Ironically, California is now borrowing money from its tax caped counties to balance the state budget. The counties are solvent, because their tax caps kept them from overspending. CA has the 6th highest total tax burden in the US (Maryland is 4th). The only taxes it caps are property taxes, which are mostly used to fund municipalities and counties. Like Maryland, California's share of property tax revenue is small.

Your county property taxes (Edgewater, MD) went up 8% in 8 years. Ours went up 76% in Annapolis and we have NO additioanl services or benefits to show for it.

Bad Economy - 2009-10-23 07:29:40

With less people paying taxes because of the bad economy, it reduces the amount of money for the government to run on. Those still fortunate to be working, probably can't afford to pay more taxes either. Especially when business are reducing salaries and enforcing furlough days off without pay.

Regardless of which party candidate gets elected. It will take more than a magic wand to fix things.

There is no free lunch!! - 2009-10-22 16:49:14

The tax cap is what is crippling CA. Instead of being straight with the people, they now have to be creative in introducing new fees etc.. to balance the budget on a good year. This is just another republican concept of trying to convince peole they can cut taxes and produce more for less. Living in LALA land is okay for clowns by not for people who care about Annapolis and the people who need public services. The city is just getting up to snuff on fire and police, you cannot go backwards now. Cordle is a backward kind of guy spewing failed republic rhetoric.
