Parking garage work roils merchants

A city contractor this week began repairs on the deteriorating downtown Hillman garage, a $500,000 project that will extend the life of the facility another five years before it is torn down and replaced.

But downtown merchants say even a temporary fix to the busy Main Street garage will hurt business during the holidays.

"The fact is you're killing the businesses," said Del. Ron George, R-Arnold, owner of Ron George Jewelers on Main Street. "That's going to hurt us. Every parking space is a number of customers downtown per day."

Parking is already at a premium in Annapolis.

What would the downtown merchants do with themselves if they weren't griping about one thing or another?

Nightmare permitting process - OK.
Histerical society - maybe.

But come on - a temporary loss of 50 spaces or less out of how many in the downtown area? Customers either go downtown to eat and shop, or they don't, because they prefer the sterile, surreal atmosphere of mall-hell.
