Volleyball helps city show off new rec center

Matt Hankey of Severna Park started a venture to put more fun into organized volleyball, but it was serious business when 160 competitive players from throughout the mid-Atlantic region battled it out on Sunday to help inaugurate the volleyball courts at the new Truxtun Park Recreation Center.

Players from throughout the mid-Atlantic region came to play local teams in the first tournament event held at the $16 million facility.

The competition, sponsored by Play 4 Keeps Volleyball, which Hankey launched with business partner Tim Hess in 2008, was the first tournament event held at the Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department's 80,000-square-foot facility that opened Dec. 14. A grand opening celebration was held Jan. 10.
