First Lady, daughter visit Annapolis

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 08/08/10

Annapolis attracts plenty of tourists during the summer but got its most high-profile visit of the season Tuesday as First Lady Michelle Obama and her 9-year-old daughter, Sasha, toured the State House.

Fresh off a trip to Spain, the pair also stopped for lunch at the Boatyard Bar and Grill in Eastport.

Dick Franyo, the restaurant's owner, said Secret Service came in about 45 minutes before the lunch Tuesday afternoon. The First Lady ordered crab cakes and "loved them," he said.

Franyo, who is vacationing in Montana, praised his staff for handling the visit and said it is "the biggest thing that ever happened to us."

"We are honored," he said.

Another Schubbie possibility. Mycroft Holmes just registered today making Schubbish type posts. Schubbie seems to like literary names and Mycroft is Sherlock's brother.

Actually he did. According to AP, Sen Obama was the most costly freshman world traveler in the Senate. In 2005 & 2006 he spent more 28K each year, 45% over his nearest senator. He continual to travel around the world in 07 & 08.

This is an 'actual' issue - 2010-08-16 10:32:25

in that it circles back to the lack of understanding of the real world. The worldview put forth by the administration is that we little people need to be managed at every level and in every instance by the elites, who they believe shouldn't live by the same rules.

This is why their economic policies have failed to turn the economy around. It is why their health care reform is so strongly disliked. They just don't get that we don't need them to do everything for us, to tell us how we should live, while they play by a different set of rules. The danger is not in the activities, but in the policies and laws that have arisen and will continue to arise out of this condescending attitude. The only way it will stop is if people realize how damaging it is and demand that their representatives in Congress take a different angle and reject this worldview.

the Obama's take these kind of trips when he was a Sen.? Was Michelle and the kids going on these types of trips then? Was he going to Hawaii twice a year and staying in million++ homes? The Bushes had money prior to coming to DC, the ranch and the home in Maine. Reagan had $$$ prior to coming to DC, so did the Kennedy's and they lived a lifestyle like that prior, don't think Obama did. So it leads one to wonder who is paying for all this.

Reynold Cavern. I think calling the Cambridge Mass. Police Stupid and exacting Executive powers to sue the state of Arizona takes Barack Obama to a whole new level.

BTW. Michelle Obamas Hotel suite in Spain cost a mere $7000 a night. Hardly a Trip down the Ocean and a beer as you call it.

Jorge - 2010-08-16 00:21:50

Jorge, let's get a couple of things out of the way, since I think we may be debating in the future...and I like your style, by the way. First off, I am a hard-core independent. Both sides annoy me equally. I am liberal about some things and I am conservative about some things. If you were talking smack about Barbara Bush and her family, I'd still be making the same argument. That said, the trip to Spain was a bad idea. I will concede that. Just bad P.R. In principle. But I will also say that it was no different than any other first family, except in the context of a huge economic recession. However, to criticize the trip to Annapolis is ridiculous. For Mr. Gunderson to call Mrs. Obama as to the security involved during her visit is petty and unrealistic. The security measures taken is identical to that of every, single first family travel detail in modern history. My singular point is this (without defending the President's performance): ideological differences with the president has dissolved into criticism of non-relevant issues. To simplify, to the right, nothing President Obama does will be correct. The Liberals did the same with President Bush. So I am would like to debate ACTUAL issues. How does that sound?

Garcia My friend, do you really expect The President of these great United States to go 'down the ocean' and drink beer for his vacation ? You must realize the President is not at all like us, he is the top of the power pyramid. For you to say that he is out of touch of you and your common friends goes without saying, This man transcended commonality and lives in a world none of us will will ever know. He is the ruler of the strongest corporate run country in the world. Why must you be bent on trying to drag him down. He is hardly overpaid, and wealth he has is from his own effort. Do you really want your President to be a common man like Josh Cohen, a man who was forced out of a world-renown Liberal Arts School where his own father teaches, only to go on to a State school for a bachelor's degree before failing to complete a master's degree program ? The rules that Apply to you Garcia, do not apply to a man who makes the rules.

I'll be damned if I would refrain from taking a wonderful exotic vacation that I earned by hard work in order to placate a commoner.

Difference - 2010-08-15 23:09:29

Barack Obama has been lecturing the American people about the need to tighten their belts, shared sacrifices, etc... I sure don't recall any other Presidents in recent memory making such demands of the average Joe while his family lives the high life. It isn't the actions, travels, or anything else that is offensive on its own. It is the hypocrisy and message that very clearly states 'I don't believe that the same rules apply to me as apply to the rest of you little people'. Again, as already explained, it is part of the repeated behaviors showing that he has no concept of how the real world works or how normal people live their lives. Without this basic knowledge, he does not have the capacity to make good decisions. He could have fixed this by surrounding himself with some people who have experience in the real world, but instead chose only those who have spent their lives in the insulated worlds of academia and government employment. I don't know how to make this any clearer.

But let's skip the allusions and go ahead and say what you have already concluded is at the heart of negative comments regarding Obama. You have been given the line, don't be so reticent to use it.

Not that it Matters...... - 2010-08-15 14:30:09

I got this little snippet from an article off of AOL News Headlined " Michelle Obamas poll number slide after Spain trip":

New York Daily News columnist Andrea Tantaros said the trip made her look like a modern-day Marie Antoinette. She noted that Barack and Michelle Obama have asked the country to make sacrifices to get through the tough times, yet "while most of the country is pinching pennies and downsizing summer sojourns ... the Obamas don't seem to be heeding their own advice."

Similar criticism was targeted at Nancy Reagan in the 1980s. She was frequently attacked for flouncing around in fancy frocks, buying expensive crockery and holding extravagant parties during the recession -- or, in the words of a 1981 New York Times article "exercising her opulent tastes in an economy that is inflicting hardship on so many."

Again missing the point... - 2010-08-15 13:07:47

The inability to understand how the 'real world' works is what is at the heart of the misguided policies from the Obama administration. They don't understand how normal people live, they don't understand how businesses have to make profits and function in a fiscally responsible manner. This demand of others to tighten their belts as they galavant around only makes this clearer. It is a symptom of the larger problem that comes when academics and lifetime politicians are left to make decisions that impact the rest of us who don't live off tax dollars.

Of course, it must be noted that it is almost as easy to be a curmudgeon who finds fault with anybody who has any power as it is to be a blind leftist. Facts be damned in either case.

Geez, First Lady came to Annapolis, you'd think she had arrived in a tank. Her visit highlighted historic Annapolis and they went to Eastport for lunch. You can be sure Mr. Fanyo was happy for her patronage. Any and all the merchants on Main Street would greet her with open arms. A Chesapeake White House, they could land and or stay at the Academy.... a revisit with friends would be good for local business and promote the city.

Jorge - 2010-08-14 16:25:40

And that is what is the problem in this country, Jorge, people like you. Yeah, I'm making fun of this debate. Why? Because it is idiotic. There is no substance. Do you think that the political discourse that we should be having right now is which president took more vacation time or the fact that Obama uses a teleprompter? And because I feel that this debate is stupid, you lump me in with "leftists." I'm no supporter of Obama. I think he's mediocre, at best. I was no supporter of Bush. I think his foreign policy was the worst in this country's history. But god forbid that anyone disagree with the left or the right in this country lest you become a casualty of the "if you're not with us you're against us philosophy. How about talking about something of substance, Jorge? If this thread was calling out George Bush for golfing I would have said the same thing. But rational, civil debate is now frowned upon by those who take their talking points from Beck, Limbaugh, Olbermann, and Maddow. If you want to actually spur thought on these boards, how about talking about the real issues instead of attacking a man for minutea.

Typical avoidance - 2010-08-14 15:38:20

Of course, when confronted with a legitimate observation regarding 'The One', leftists have to make absurd statements in an attempt to delegitimize anybody who dares speak negatively of the President or anything around him. Unfortunately for you all, the American public realize how ridiculous this is, which compounds the negative feelings already growing out of opposition to the policies and laws he has put into place.

Supporters of leftist dictators throughout history have engaged in these same behaviors. Luckily, a few years of leftist rule will not be enough to fully usurp our long and proud tradition of freedom and liberty in the United States.

The OUTRAGE! - 2010-08-14 11:15:34

Did everyone notice that Mrs. Obama and her children had ICE in their drinks while they were here? Just like an elitist...room temperature just isn't good enough. And doesn't making that ice contribute to so-called global warming? And who do you think pays for that ice? Taxpayers. Because BGE gets government subsidies to build plants that produce the electricity that powers that icemaker. George Bush and his family never had ice in their drinks. In fact, they never drank and fluids at all. Could you image if George Bush had ice in his drinks? The Progressives would be screaming bloody murder. But OH NO, let the Obamas have ice until their lips go numb, and no one says boo! Disgusting.

'Progressive' reaction (or lack the - 2010-08-14 08:00:11

Imagine for a moment that it were the Bush family or a businessman taking these trips. Bush was viciously attacked for playing golf (Obama plays MUCH more but there is nary a word from the media or the left who were up in arms back then) and for taking 'vacations' at his ranch. He had a fully working office in TX, it was no different from being in DC. But Obama goes running around on vacations while telling everybody else that they really need to watch their pocketbooks and be responsible and everybody thinks it is wonderful. It is hypocrisy of the highest order.

For just a moment, imagine that all of the traveling by the Obama were being undertaken by a CEO and his or her family after that CEO laid off a couple hundred people. Is it legal? Does the CEO deserve a vacation because he or she works hard? Sure. Does it display a ridiculous amount of tone deafness and inability to understand what is going on in the lives of the 'regular' people. Absolutely.

Nobody is saying that they don't have the right to travel, but that telling everybody else that they need to 'tighten their belts' as they go around the world spending millions of taxpayer dollars is just not a respectful way to act toward the American people.

I Hate Politics - 2010-08-14 03:08:31

I've only emphasized this in about 4 posts now and counting (I Hope Not).

I've said repeatedly that I don't care whether your tie is Red (Republican),White (Independant),or Blue (Democrat) all politics is Legalized Crime.

When my Tax Money is wasted because privileged children of politicians come to my city complete with police escort and are given a very selective seemingly choreographed tour of the State Capital yes I do get mad.

Once again I use my favorite word. Then other posters "springboard" my words into diatribes about race, semantics, and other apples and oranges B.S.

I recall Bush had listed about 33% of his days in office were vacation days, about 110 of those days he spent at Camp David which is used for the president to get away. I think another 100 days or so were spent at his ranch in Texas and the family home in Maine. I believe Bush played golf 8 times in his last 4 years, Obama has played at least 35 times in 1 1/2 years. Not to mention how he loves to fire up the plane to go make a speech, 160 flights in his first year, just crazy.

Tyler ///// Economy - 2010-08-12 19:40:05

As far as the economy getting fixed, I don't think we will get out of this mess for at least another 2 to 3 years. The President is optimistic he has to be. Will his policies work, who knows. We should have known this was coming with the overprice homes in the past and people taking out mortgages that they knew and the mortgage company knew they could not afford. I think when all the computer companies started popping up and making alot of money it gave us a false sense of security and that did not last long. One thing to help fix things here would be to stop sending our manufacturing jobs over seas and find a way to keep them here.

Some economist have said, this the new norm. I for one hope not. Major companies when restructuring may take 2 to 5 years to rebound, lets hope it is sooner for the U.S. Will we get out of this mess, yes but not tommorow.

Again, I'm not an Obama-apologist, but your assertion is utterly and completely false. Would you care to cite your fact with a Web link? This is going to spark yet another stupid argument, but it seems to me that your assertion that President Bush was in Texas but working gives you quite a bit of wiggle room. Could both side just stipulate that no president is ever truly on vacation? Does he put an Out-Of-Office assistant on his email? This is just more petty BS. Same as when the left attacked Bush for his vacation time. Has the level of political discourse in this country really dissolved into this nonsensical pettiness where people have stopped actually debating real issues? It's getting pathetic.

If your last post was the point you were trying to get across, then that's the way it should have been written instead of "I like the line".
She's the President's wife and the mother of his children. Would you prefer she show up unannounced? I'm certain the representatives of Maryland/Annapolis appreciated the advanced warning and the opportunity to make their visit memorable.
Mark had some good points for you. I'm pretty sure her trip to Annapolis in no way affected the welfare of our country, which can't be fixed anytime soon regardless of who you are or what color you happen to be.

The PRESIDENT has not taken a single overseas vacation. Every trip for pleasure has been within the United States, and, in comparison to Bush at this point in his presidency he has taken roughly HALF the vacation days that Bush has.

so...is Annapolis, or Maine considered exotic in your book?
Why dont you just relax and let Michelle and the kids enjoy a pleasant afternoon wandering the streets of Annapolis while Dad works.

My gripe with the Obamas (as with any politcal family) is the fact that they seem to be more interested in their exotic/exclusive vacations then the welfare of this country.

Finally, FinReg did absolutely nothing to address one of the root causes of the current crisis, Fannie and Freddie. The housing bubble was due in significant part to the actions of Fannie and Freddie introducing sub-prime mortgages and lowering lending standards, as I have pointed out in previous articles. Warnings and red flags date back to the late 1990s. I appreciate the fact that you weathered the last Great Depression of the 1930s. As one who majored in US history during my undergrad, I understand it was an extremely difficult time for our nation, when we teetered between Fascism and Nativism on the Far Right and Socialism and Communism on the Far Left. Coincidentally, I was born and raised in the hometown of the President during that time and visited many times the living room of his Fireside Chats. During my studies, most of the worked I read suggested that what pulled us out of the Great Depression was not Keynesian economics, but rather the massive Industrial build out during World War II, coupled with the shortage of free labor due to the greatest generation fighting in Europe and the Pacific. Government should referee and protect the common-man, but it shouldnt own or overextend its hand in the economy. As it stands currently, the Feds account for over 40% of total GDP entirely too much in my opinion.

David, I appreciate the rebuttal as well as the questions you posed to me. First, I must caveat that I lack the time to provide a fully detailed and thoroughly researched rebuttal, so forgive me. However, I will provide a quick response. First, President Obama assured us that his stimulus package would prevent unemployment from topping 8%. Currently, we are officially hovering just under 10%, but in reality much higher. Next, his healthcare bill did nothing to contain costs, as most analysts, right and left, acknowledge. There was an interesting discussion pertaining to this on Wednesdays Morning Joe on MSNBC. As you may recall, AT&T and John Deere were just two of many business that had to readjust yearly earnings due to costs associated with Obamacare. For example, it is now open enrollment for most companies, such as at the midsized business where I work for. Guess what, healthcare insurance is up significantly for 2011, which is being passed on to me. Businesses, large and small, are sitting on large amounts of cash. However, companies are afraid to hire and make capital investments due to uncertainties associated with the expiration of the Bush taxes cuts, pending increases in the Capital Gains and Dividend Taxes, and the increase in healthcare insurance costs. I would refer you to Mondays Wall Street Journal for an excellent first person account of this problem from a small business owner.

Bravo on the visit. Tax dollars and their travel--I am cool with that.

My issue on the whole Spain deal was that just a few weeks earlier she had made a statement to vacation in the Gulf States to help them out, promptly jetted to Maine and then off to Spain.

Seems a bit hypocritical to me and certainly does not give off the right impression. What would we do if Mayor Cohen and his Economic Development Council develop a "Shop Local" campaign and we discover that all of their shopping is done in Georgetown?

Question the failed policies, not t - 2010-08-11 18:37:08

I am no supporter of the President. In fact, I did not vote for the guy. I believe his failed economic policies and over expansion of government are leading us into a double-dip recession. Just yesterday the FED issued a dire warning about the state of our economy. After 19 months in office, President Obama needs to stop blaming Dubya for the economic mess. President Obamas failed policies are only exacerbating the problem; he is worse than Jimmy Carter. However, people, please

The First Lady and First Family deserve a vacation just like anyone else. How many trips did Dubya make? The cost of the added security comes with the office and the respect the office deserves. I applaud the First Lady and daughter visiting some of our historical sites. Let just hope that her next visit to Annapolis after January 2013 is as former First Lady.

Mr Gunderson, I love it. You can almost predict what the same people on this site are going to say about whatever issues come up involving elected officials or their families. No matter what, some will try to make it a political issue. Guess what people, when a husband (or sooner or later) a wife gets elected as president, their family is entitled to use your money (our tax money) so they can go on vacation. Get over it. They use your money the second they get up, no wait, guess what, they are using your money when they sleep, do you think the armed protection that they need goes to sleep when they do. Are you saying they should have to pay for their own protection? Guess your real complaint is still who won and who loss the election. Boo Hoo, how dare they come to Annapolis on tax payers money. Like this is something new.

That was a direct quote from a reuters news report. But please feel free to look it up yourself-there are plenty of articles about it online.
But, you know, technically, I suppose you ARE correct. We taxpayers DO pay the SALARY of the president.

maybe you think they should ask our permission first before coming to Annapolis... or going to Spain?

It is an honor and one of Cohen's proverbial feathers in MRE's cap that Mrs. Obama came to our great town and ate what we locals eat. I am very impressed that her handlers, like Clinton's when they directed him toward the used book store on Maryland avenue, we able to get her to a genuine Annapolis location. No worldly cosmopolitan likes to be subjected to a semi-polished tourist spot. I think Zina would have been proud and courteous as the first back woman mayor of Annapolis to join Ms. Obama.

There are people in our lovely Annapolis that probably take more lavish, lengthy trips than the wife of the leader of the free world.

Nice to see the first family in Annapolis. I hope they enjoyed their stay.

I bet traffic was a beast as usual.

"Fresh off a trip to Spain".

Why didn't they put "Fresh off their Taxpayer Funded Trip to Spain".

Also. I wonder if the State's Archivist (this is the guy who gave them the guided tour of the State House/Grounds) showed them the statue of Roger Taney the Supreme Court justice instrumental in the Dred Scott decision.

It seems they got an autographed copy of Roots and got to see the Thorough Marshall statue. How Convenient.

BTW. I still think Reynold Cavern is Chris Fox but I could be wrong.

Messiah - 2010-08-10 22:10:33

Oprah, aka the Oracle, called Obama "The One" and he was quite happy to accept the praise. Harry Truman, hardly my favorite president, was not afraid to walk the streets of Washington. Today our leaders are removed from us. They cannot even travel without causing major disruption to productive citizens. Remember the first Bush regime where the President didn't even know what a grocery store scanner was? If our federal officials kept the federal government small and within the Constitution then the President and his family would be quite irrelevant to the American people and would walk the streets without much notice. As for the second half of my comment, that was from "Social Statistics" http://bit.ly/cEMKBD

Hyperbole - 2010-08-10 19:55:28

Okay, Mr. Spencer's letter is a fantastic case-study of the deterioration of civility and pettiness masquerading as political discourse. Following the game-plan of the left during the tenure of President Bush, the right is responding with equal derision aimed at President Obama. To wit: How DARE President Bush/Obama vacation in Texas/Hawaii instead of visiting the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina/the oil rig explosion. Mr. Spenser's use of the phrase "so-called Messiah" is interestingly typical. However, usually, in using the phrase "so-called" one is calling into question the title a person bestows upon themselves (e.g. Michael Jackson the so-called King of Pop). I would defy Mr. Spenser to find any evidence that would point to President Obama or his supporters calling him the Messiah. "The current Czar lives in constant fear of assassination. Okay. Implying that he is a coward. Did Presidents Bush or Clinton do without Secret Service, or did they wear blue shirts with a big "S" on the front? Do you think the Secret Service would allow the leader of the free world or his family to travel without intense protection? That has never happened once in modern history. Debate facts and policies. That is all fair game. The sort of evaluation offered by Mr. Spenser sounds weak and contrived.

outraged - 2010-08-10 17:50:09

So I have to get stuck in traffic so our so-called Messiah's wife can get a police escort to visit our city? The ruling elites are afraid of their own people. The early histories of all European States, and the recent history of Russia, illustrate the same truth; and if we are to judge by his habits, the present Czar lives in constant fear of assassination. Nor do we find that those who bear universal sway, and seem able to do as they please, can really do so. They limit their own freedom in limiting that of others: their despotism recoils, and puts them also in bondage.
