Outside Cape St. Claire Elementary School a yellow school bus pulled up at 11:30 a.m. Twenty-four kids from Debbie Yates' third-grade class clambered aboard, along with six parents. Several kids carefully carried tubs filled with watery mud and a few strands of grass.
Since the fall, the kids had participated in the "Grasses in Classes" program, sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources and Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The schoolchildren traveled to CAT North and learned about what they referred to as "SAVs" - submerged aquatic vegetation. In plain speak: underwater grass.
