The first coffee shop was neither a Starbucks nor a Chock full o'Nuts - It was the Kiva Han which opened in Istanbul in about the year 1471.

History does not record if Kiva Han had a jingle, 32 flavors, a breakfast menu or edgy barristas or a recording contract with Paul McCartney. Coffee has been keeping people alert and perky since the ninth century. Ethiopians observed the coffee bean's pick-me-up benefits on their herds of goats. But, judging from the explosion of cafes and coffee bars in recent years, the roasted, nut-brown bean's popularity continues to grow. On a hunch, I began toting up all the places...
