It seems fitting that in the year of its 60th anniversary, the National Ballet School also celebrates a student who has earned the prestigious honor to compete in the second annual Cecchetti International Classical Ballet Competition this summer in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Bowie resident Mary Steward was 4 years old when she began her ballet training at the National Ballet School.
The competition, held every four years, was last held in Australia in 2004.
Seventeen-year-old Mary Steward of Bowie, a senior at Archbishop Spalding High School, was one of 40 classical ballet dancers chosen out of 600 applicants from throughout the world, to compete in the competition committed to the work of Maestro Enrico Cecchetti.
