Kevin Steers, 17, of Crofton was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in sheet metal at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference held June 21-26 in Kansas City, Mo.

Kevin Steers recently won state and national recognition for his skills in sheet metal. The South River High senior plans to continue his work-study in the field of heating, ventilation and air conditioning during the upcoming school year and will consider a career in engineering. The conference was open to high school and college technical education programs. Contests were run and judged by industry experts using industry standards. According to the SkillsUSA Web site "Contestants in the sheet metal contest are tested on their ability to perform such jobs as connecting sheet metal pieces with drive cleats, spot welding and riveting. Skills tested may include straight duct, transition fitting and 45-degree entry tap fitting....
