Meet two of the threats to traditional marriage.
One's a stay-at-home dad and part-time museum curator, the other a corporate attorney. They drive a Volvo station wagon and a Saab and live in a one-story waterfront home in Arnold that they're about to renovate.
Almost every night at 6 o'clock, they sit down for dinner with their children, 8-year-old Helen and 6-year-old Michael. Barry Kessler, 49, and David Hankey, 50, exchanged rings years ago in New York's Central Park. But of course, in the eyes of the law, that meant nothing. I agree with Mr. Hartley. We have a number of gay friends. They are all great people, yet they are the victims of discrimination little different then Christians find in e.g. Saudi Arabia. Homophobia is just fear that engenders hatred. It is a shame on our society.
Absolutely, we support laws that churches cannot be forced to do marriage ceremonies against their beliefs. The issue is about civil, not religious marriages. Our Gay citizens deserve equality and justice under the law. And we should remember the golden rule about do unto others as we would have done unto us, the basis of our Judeo-Christian Heritage. The legislature should support civil marriage for gay citizens.
