Charitable giving in America has a venerable history. It came from ideas of mutual assistance, democratic principles of civic participation, and varied approaches to problem solving among others. Neighbors settling a new land have to help each other in order for everyone to survive. Giving circles as the latest trend in philanthropy really just reflect our country's first strong traditions of citizen initiatives and individual efforts to promote the public welfare.
