Eric Hartley: Schools fight uphill battle on healthy foodPublished 06/11/09
When I think of school lunches, I remember cold cans of Hawaiian Punch and those ice-cream sandwiches with the chalky "chocolate" coating sticking to your fingers. Here's what I don't remember: carrots and celery, salad, green beans, whole wheat buns, rice and fresh apples, all of which were on the menu during a recent trip to Central Elementary School in Edgewater. Maybe that stuff was there in my day, too, but I couldn't tell you. But more kids in county school lunch lines have started picking healthy options just in the past year.
