Eric Hartley: Schools fight uphill battle on healthy food

When I think of school lunches, I remember cold cans of Hawaiian Punch and those ice-cream sandwiches with the chalky "chocolate" coating sticking to your fingers.

Here's what I don't remember: carrots and celery, salad, green beans, whole wheat buns, rice and fresh apples, all of which were on the menu during a recent trip to Central Elementary School in Edgewater. Maybe that stuff was there in my day, too, but I couldn't tell you.

But more kids in county school lunch lines have started picking healthy options just in the past year.

"You can see students are more aware than they were 15 years...
