Standing in the parking lot of the Dover Downs hotel-casino here, you can see a Best Buy, a Denny's, a TJ Maxx and, just up busy Route 13, the Dover Mall with Macy's, Sears and the rest.
It's much like what Arundel Mills mall could look like in a few years if, as expected, a plan to put 4,750 slot machines there is approved later this year.
That's part of the reason most members of the commission charged with deciding where slots will go in Maryland visited Dover yesterday as part of their first official...

crime studies - 2009-06-22 08:20:39
There have been a number of studies done on quality of life in relation to casinos. Papers on New Jersey, Philadelphia, Delaware, and other sites. You have to look at the authors of the studies as well as the overall picture of the studies. Anti-gambling reports new entrances to Hades whereas proponents extoll hearing angels.
I tend to believe the studies that are more even-handed and report a mix of benefits and problems. A well-run casino does not have overall effect on crime statistics. Any time you increase the amount of visitors and people in general increase the total numbers of incidents of any nature. If anything, crime statistics in the immediate area tend to go down. Traffic of course increases, compulsive gambling may increase, and the worst (in my opinion) effect is the establishment becomes a dominant factor in the local economy and politics.
This is not much different than if a mega church was built, or other similar sized establishment. With the possible closing of libraries, furloughs, and cutting of services, I would welcome a big investment (regardless of specific location)

Prostitution, drugs, theft? - 2009-06-20 14:11:45
I know this is an editorial, and therefore not burdened with hard facts, but I would like to know if there is a disproportionate amount of crime in and around the gambling venues in Delaware. We are lucky to have a working example of the type of gambling we can expect here and should exploit Delaware by using data collected there in order to analyze the effects gambling has on certain crimes. Of course, in so much as this seems like a no brainer, someone has probably done it already. If not--shame , shame, shame.
