'Crofton Plots Crackdown on Gangs," read a 1991 headline in The Capital. "Local Gang Wreaks Havoc," said another, from 1996. The latter article reported that county police believed a single gang of about three dozen people was responsible for half the crime in Crofton. And today, of course, many residents are worried anew after reports that a teenage gang rivalry might have led to the death of a 14-year-old Crofton boy, Christopher Jones, who was attacked May 30 while riding his bike home. While I feel badly for Chris's mother, it was her - not the school system - that let him go out alone on a weekend in spite of danger to her son. Trying to transfer her feelings of guilt to the schools is a natural reaction, but unjustified. I'm not saying any of this is her fault, only that she's probably second-guessing her decision to let him go out alone in the midst of this turmoil. It may provide some comfort to her to blame the whole incident on the wicked public school system.
