But he worries the city he loves has changed so much that businesses like his aren't welcome.
He's heard rumblings that people think his fryer would put off too much heat. He thinks it's really about "class warfare" and a certain element being uncomfortable with a fried chicken joint and the clientele it brings. It's a sad marker of how Annapolis has changed.
"Downtown when I was growing up was very mixed," said the 59-year-old Jarrell, who was raised on Conduit Street. "You had some...

Tourist Center - 2009-10-21 09:42:20
I like Molly K's suggestion of putting a mini tourist center in the Market House. That's a great idea. I had lived in Annapolis for probably 4 years before I noticed the tourist center on West Street. There should really be something right on the City Dock where most people start their exploring. That stretch of West Street is great, but it's usually where people finish their wandering and end up for dinner.

Locals hold the key - 2009-10-20 15:50:23
You know...the market house is only a piece of the great pie. All of downtown Annapolis needs to stop being a tourist attraction and get back to appealing to the locals. I have been going there for over 40 years, with the exception of the last few, I can't afford it anymore. The past 8 year administration has taken Annapolis to all time lows. I doubt if Annapolis will ever be as great as like it was years ago, but there is opportunity to make it pretty close. Vote wisely in the upcoming election because things can continue to slope downward or be completely revamped and start anew. Not saying that a new mayor can fix anything, just saying the incoming administration will have control over the next 4 years of our downtown life.

Taste of Annapolis - 2009-10-20 13:06:55
The Market House should be a place where tourists and locals -- i.e., PEOPLE -- can get affordable food and beverages, and maybe a welcome center with information about events and attractions. The food should be local and focus on Maryland, including crabs and chicken. (Crabcakes, crab soup, fried chicken are musts.) We are a tourist economy downtown, we need to embrace and welcome them. Right now, we're charging folks to park their cars and wander around without rhyme or reason. I knew the downtown was in trouble when I saw the first concert on the circle in the Big Ugly, Annapolis Towne Center -- it was packed (free parking -- hint, hint). We locals also want to be tourists in our own town and want to be entertained and charmed. Downtown has little left to offer, but Market House is an asset that needs to be used wisely to re-create a visible center of the town.

Annapolis Seafood, the chicken man, bread and baked goods. These would be a great addition, and not compete with sit downs.

market place dilly-dallying - 2009-10-19 00:40:20
: Close the market place and use it as a watering trough for horses. Food is/has been/was abominable for years. Send every available tousista to 'Chick and Henry's' at no charge on a horse drawn jittyney and let them get a great reception of great food stuffs and newe fashioned Annapolis tradition at reasonable prices without being ripped off and their $dollars squandered. To say the 'market place' sucks is to try to talk with a lemon stuck in one's mouth while bobbing one's head accordingingly.

Cohen/Gourmet - 2009-10-18 18:17:20
I would ask Josh Cohen to please supply the voters with a definition of 'gourmet food'. What does gourmet food feel like, taste like , smell like. Please, Josh, supply us with several examples of gourmet food currently in annapolis.
Thanks.

market house template - 2009-10-18 10:48:17
1. chris;s charcoal pit express
2. Joy Luck Express
3. Rocco's Pizza Express
4. La Deliciouso Express
5. Locally Source Coffee Shoppe Express ( Cobblestone, Peets)
6. Waterman's Co-op Express
7. WholeFood Express ( appeal to the yuppies and tourists)
8) Carlson's Express
You have to put Express next to the name to let the public know these outlets are established and more is available elsewhere. If the profit is not so good at the Market house outlet the increased visibliity will surely increase traffic in the main stores.

Machoian - 2009-10-18 10:31:08
I can remember going to the Market House and getting the best fried chicken from Machoian. It was reasonably priced and delicious. Sure would like to see it back. You can't grab an inexpensive lunch anywhere downtown except for maybe Subway. The Capital ran a nice article about the gentleman who worked the raw bar years ago. That's how I like to remember the markethouse.

Yep - 2009-10-18 09:52:32
Bobby Jarrel is a true genius and his comments are spot on. I hate going downtown now and have often commented that no Bobby=no market house. Don't tourists like to pretend they are locals; eat what the locals eat. on my last venture downtown I bought a muffin at the stall ( appropriate word) across from the soup place and it was 2.65--it was NOT worth it. Gourmet food ? Hardly.
why does a market house need Gourmet food anyway ? Besides "gourment" is in the tongue of the beholder.

Market House - 2009-10-18 09:40:49
Everyone complained that Dean & Deluca would have been too expensive...well last week I dumb enough to to pay way too much for a muffin from Atwaters....and it was the most horrible dry thing I ever tasted. At least I know Dean & Deluca has quality items that are worth the price you pay. It is a shame that the locals and visitors do not have an affordable Market House anymore. Yes it was not the most spectaular looking place, but the old Market House had character...now it run by a bunch of "Characters". New is not always good. Come back chicken man and everyone else that was there...aren't we supposed to be the Historic Annapolis distict. The Market House was historic.

prices drive visitors away - 2009-10-18 09:28:24
So my in-laws are here from Michigan and we took them to Annapolis because they asked us to. When it came time to eat, they opted to leave the city because they felt it was too expensive.
I would like to see dining establishments that range from fine dining to very casual fare in Market House. It's a shame people would feel excluded because they couldn't afford the food and they're residents of the city.
People are watching every penny, myself included especially with a child in college and paying for a wedding within a 4-week period, so it's important that the experience of visiting Annapolis extends a welcoming hand to everyone's wallet, regardless of size.
