Q: I have a Pekingese who is 11 years old. She has had two episodes in the past year where she had trouble walking and seemed to be in pain. Her veterinarian told me it was her back. What can I do to prevent this from happening again? Find Us On Facebook
A: Small dogs, especially those with long backs and short legs, like Pekingese and dachshunds, are prone to back problems. The most likely cause of her back pain is degenerative disc disease. The inter-vertebral discs act as cushions between each of the bones (vertebrae) of the spine. The disc material may protrude and cause pressure on the spinal cord.
