A: The thyroid gland (located on either side of the trachea in the throat area) is responsible for producing thyroxine, the hormone that controls the rate of many activities of the body's tissues.
The metabolism of the body slows down if there is not enough thyroxine in the bloodstream. Weight is gained since calories are being used at a lower metabolic rate when there is an underactive gland.
