Q: Our 13-year-old cat has been acting his normal self, sleeping most of the day, getting up to eat or go to the litter box. The only change we noticed was that he wasn't jumping up on his favorite chair. Instead he would curl up on the rug in front of it. Our veterinarian examined him and found he was painful in his lower back and hips. X-rays showed a lot of arthritis. Our dog takes a medication for arthritis, but the vet said it wasn't safe for cats. She didn't have too much to offer other than getting him on a strict diet. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
