Tranquility is not the word that usually leaps to mind when describing a room full of 10- and 11-year-olds. Yet the group of 12 children in the meditation class at Tracey's Elementary School's after-school enrichment program were serene and calm.

Some lay stretched out on mats or beach towels. Others sat, legs folded, arms relaxed, as the swooshing sounds of gentle waves lapping against a shore played gently throughout the room. Initial giggling, coughing, squirming and whispering gave way to the seductive sound of the water. The children were still, eyes closed.
