The Carrie Weedon Science Center in Galesville did not have to search very far for the first topic kicking off its annual speaker series next week, but the subject is about as far away as one can get.
Peter West of Davidsonville is a member of the center's board, but his work in public affairs for the National Science Foundation takes him to the tips of Earth, Antarctica and the Arctic.
He has been to both poles, seven or eight times all told, and to the chilliest regions on the planet more times than that.
