Around South County: Deale Bluegrass: Finger-pickin' goodPublished 09/25/08
Bluegrass music may have its origins in the Depression-era South, but in Deale on Saturday it was a fresh and lively sound.
Mitchelle Stephenson - For The CapitalLarry Edward 'Chicken Gravy' Phipps stands alongside his 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe during the car show at the Deale Bluegrass Festival on Saturday. Gravy was defiantly confident that his car, also known as Gravy, would win the car competition because, “this is the only car in the show with no Bondo, only rust.” Sadly for Gravy, a beautifully restored 1951 red Ford pickup won Best in Show. Organizers of the Deale Bluegrass Festival estimated that about 1,200 people came to Herrington Harbour North on Saturday to hear the five bands, see the car show, eat a little, drink a little and generally have a good time. The bands included The Good Deale Bluegrass, The Country Gentlemen, Patuxent Partners, Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass, and The Grascals.
