Chimney fire damages historic Mayo homePublished 01/15/09
A two-alarm chimney fire damaged the historic home of Commodore Isaac Mayo in Edgewater early Tuesday morning, county Fire Department officials said.

Gresham, the former home of Commodore Isaac Mayo, suffered damage in a fire early Tuesday morning. The home was initially a smaller structure built in the late 18th Century, added onto by the naval hero, and restored by its current owners in the 1980s.The blaze caused only $30,000 in damage, but could have been much worse, said Lt. Shawn Jones. "The blaze has been ruled unintentional, limited to the attic space above the bedroom," he said. That's where the two occupants of the home were awakened by the 18th-century home's smoke alarms, but escaped with no injury.
