New boat, the old-fashioned wayPublished 02/22/09
About a hundred years ago, Capt. Perry Rogers began building boats, powered by engines instead of sails, that were designed for bay waters around Shady Side.

Hazard hopes to have the boat in the water by July.The bateau with an angled stern - which later developed into the now common deadrise workboat - would become a favorite of the men who made their living on the water. The distinct angle of the stern coming out of the water was designed because watermen wanted to anchor stern to the wind while they worked. It's good to see traditional craftsmenship being implimented for personal joy. This craft will be a treasure for generations in the Hazard family. I just hope that none understate the true value of such a project. This boat will be priceless.
