Move will level playing field for recruiting, volunteers

Three Edgewater area youth sports leagues have nearly completed a merger. Edgewater Athletics, Mayo Sports and Greater South River Athletics have joined together to become South River Youth Athletics, effective July 1.

Members of the transition team for the newly merged South River Youth Athletics league put the finishing touches on the bylaws.
The merger is taking place because the principals in the three leagues decided late last year that one large, well-run league will be able to compete in the county better than three smaller leagues.
Mayo and Edgewater previously had attempted to merge years ago. Scott Zepko, president of Mayo Sports for the past five years, said that those efforts simply never panned out.
