In 1981, Val Avedon was on her second date with her future husband, John Gardiner, both college students at the time. She attended Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., and he was at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg.
On that night, while driving to his former college for a visit, Mother Nature called on her, and the two made a roadside stop outside of Emmitsburg.
During those few minutes, the now-Mrs. Gardiner looked down and noticed what she describes as a "metal trinket" laying face down on a stone wall. She took it off the wall and put it in her pocket.
