Severn School students are now wielding plastic - pre-paid debit cards - to buy cafeteria food or books and supplies.
The cards, along with the school's new $20,000 RMS software system, is streamlining the purchasing in the cafeteria and bookstore, said Julie Pinnix Fish, the school's director of business and finance.
"We don't use trays in the cafeteria, so it's awkward to pull out cash and juggle food. The concept came from colleges where you put everything on your plastic card ... " she said. "It's a prepaid, draw-down account. Parents prepay to load the card."
