Whether wielding ice cream scoops, bagging groceries, waiting tables or manning retail store check-out counters, some Severna Park teens were fortunate to land summer jobs. But, in line with a nationwide trend, others were not so lucky.

In May, Northeastern University's Center for Labor Market Studies predicted that little more than one-third of 16- to 19-year-olds in the U.S. were likely to be employed this summer and the statistic proved accurate. The summer job market for high school and college students is depressed and Severna Park has not been immune.
