Band Director R. Thomas Powell's voice boomed over the microphone as he called out a cadence from his perch atop scaffolding on a hot athletic field last Friday.

Substituting rooled-up newspapers for heavy brass instruments, and sticks for flags, Severna Park Marching Band members practice part of a 14-minute routine designed around a "Les Miserables" theme.Advancing toward him in parallel lines were 85 Severna Park High School band members marching with synchronized precision.
