The deep chill of the Arctic came to the community of Stewart's Landing on New Year's Day by way of the annual Penguin Plunge.

The annual Penguin Plunge of Stewart’s Landing was held at noon on New Year’s Day. This year’s event drew 34 penguins and raised $350 for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.The event brought out 34 residents - most wearing only bathing suits or T-shirts and shorts - who plunged into the icy waters of Old Man Creek, located off of the Magothy River. The second annual submersion was once again held at the community marina and made possible after Stewart's Landing resident Thurman Reynolds, founder of the event, broke a quarter-inch layer of ice that had formed on top of the water, starting at the beach-area launch site of the plunge.
