Green Hornets: Hornet gridders in playoffs

Published 11/05/09

With a rookie head coach and a roster filled with players of mixed levels of experience, the 80-pound Division 1 Hornets' 19-0 loss to Crofton in the season opener left the organization wondering what kind of season this team would have.

Head Coach Marc McDaniel said he saw potential in his team and felt certain that the loss did not indicate what would happen in the future.

Led by Carlos Coates, Ryan McDaniel and Tucker Denault, the defense recorded four shutouts and allowed only one touchdown in three other games.

Contributing to the defense are Chris Flynn, Gage Bangert, Will Sherwood, Jake Cooley, Dominic Hall, Garret Moore, Jake Eberhart and Ethan Paige. Defensive coaches are Chuck Bangert, Chuck Hall, Pat Denault and Chris Eberhart.

The offense is led by quarterback Brent McVicker and halfback Alex Green. The offensive line consists of Matt Stachitas, Andrew Hetrick, Jake Cooley, Brendan Simonds, Garrett Edwards, Matt Alton and Zach Gamber.

Hornet running backs include Green, Coates, McDaniel, Sherwood, Niles Tinsley, and Denault. Offensive coaches are Marc McDaniel, Roger Simonds, Jason Alton and Chris Flynn. Eight different players scored touchdowns this season indicating a high level of teamwork.

The Hornets enter the county 80-pound Division 1 playoffs Saturday as the No. 5 seed, and will visit No. 4 Edgewater in the first round.
