The summers of 2001, '02 and '03, the Arundel High School senior traveled to the town of Ugu in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo. There, on a construction mission with other members of the Severn and Wheaton Southern Baptist churches, she helped to build six chapels.
Kelly, a 17-year-old from Odenton, also distributed food and clothing to Ugu residents and practiced her clowning under the name "Alegria," which means joy.
