Recent activity at a Gambrills surface mine suspected of contaminating groundwater has county officials and activist groups worried that fly ash is being blown into the air and posing a health risk.

Machinery moves fly ash at the BBSS sand-and-gravel mine off Evergreen Road in Gambrills. County officials and residents are concerned that moving the substance - a byproduct of burning coal that has contaminated nearby wells - will disperse it into the air and might cause further contamination of groundwater.
Reliable Contracting Co. is completing grading work at a sand-and-gravel mine near Evergreen Road that has been partially filled with fly ash - a powdery gray by-product of burning coal that has been linked to heavy metal contamination in 23 nearby wells.
Rob Scrivener, a general manager at Reliable and president of BBSS, the company that owns the mine, said the work is necessary to prevent additional environmental hazards. But...
