The Maryland Transit Authority notified county leaders last week that there is no money to pay for a direct train to help accommodate the crush of commuters expected to arrive at Fort George G. Meade later this year.
Local transportation planners are still looking to other options, particularly buses, to boost ridership in advance of the estimated 22,000-defense industry jobs expected to materialize by 2015 under the Base Realignment and Closure process, or BRAC, at the west county Army post.

Several questions: Would the direct train be a financially feasible project? Has MTA considered looking for a private partner in developing this link? Why not consider connecting Greenbelt to Odenton?

Leopold is very forward thinking and he is obviously too smart for politics. I applaud his progressive ideas. Perhaps it is best for all parties if the whole BRAC idea is either put on indefinite hold or completely reconsidered until such time as the much-needed supporting infrastructure is more than a pipe-dream.
You gotta have money to spend money and you gotta spend money to make money. It's pretty darn crowded in AA county as it is.
