For centuries, Halloween has been observed on Oct. 31. In ancient times on this occasion, fires were lit across hilltops to ward off evil spirits, and it was believed souls of the dearly-departed visited their former residences. Autumnal festivals took on sinister significance as ghosts, goblins, witches and black cats came out to play.

Pagan festivals influenced the Christian observance of All Hallows Eve, both being celebrated on the same day. And, Halloween became the most favorable time of the year for fortune tellers to predict the future regarding birth, marriage, luck, health and death.

Over time, Halloween evolved into a more secular observance and it is thought Irish immigrants introduced many of today's customs in America during the late 19th century.

At one point, mischief-making and vandalism often occurred on the last day of October. Fortunately, these pranks changed as the observance developed into a day for kids to dress up in costumes, going from house to house asking for treats rather than tricks.

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so if you're staying home, get ready for plenty of trick-or-treaters. Until then, here's a look at some of this year's Halloween action at a variety of haunts around the area:
