Infected mosquito found in Patuxent Wildlife RefugePublished 08/22/08
State and county officials are warning residents to take extra precautions and working to control mosquitoes in the Odenton area after one of the insects infected with a rare disease was discovered at the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge. This is the state's first case of eastern equine encephalitis, which can cause neurological damage, seizure and coma in humans. The disease is rare and often occurs in rural areas close to swamps and marshes with high mosquito populations. "The risk is fairly low, but certainly, there is a risk," said Dr. Jinlene Chan, a physician with the Anne Arundel County Department of Health....
