He grew up on a creek across the Chester River from Chestertown, where he and his two brothers spent their youth boating, fishing, crabbing, and playing in and around the Rosin Creek and the river.
"We had a rowboat, a little motor boat and later a small sailboat," he recalled. "We had the run of the creek. We were always on the creek fishing or on the pier, jumping off into the mud at low-tide."
