At the end of June, a friend of mine, Ted Weber with the Conservation Fund, invited me and a few others to go explore the vast preserve surrounding Bacon Ridge Branch in Crownsville, one of the primary headwaters of the South River.

Erik Michelsen is executive director of the South River Federation.The property, owned by the Maryland Environmental Trust, represents a key holding in the South River Greenway, protected lands in the watershed feeding the upper portions of the river. Always up for a vigorous hike through territory I haven't explored, I eagerly accepted.
