While doing fieldwork for a potential stormwater restoration project in Severna Park, "Bogman" Keith Underwood discovered another rare stand of Atlantic white cedar long thought nearly extinct in these parts.

The surprise find gave him confidence conditions could be restored in the several-acre bottomland forming the headwaters of Yantz Creek.

"We can restore this cedar bog, the elements are here," Mr. Underwood said after also noticing other telltale species amid the snow-covered bog: sphagnum moss, Magnolia virginiana and more. "Finding this is a really big deal."

I read it...did you? - 2009-02-07 08:06:10

Yes, I read it....
I did read the article and it began by saying "while doing fieldwork for a potential stormwater restoration project..." key word being "restoration", so...it seems to me that the property owner is obviously making an effort to get some expert guidance on how they can move forward to restore and maintain this unique environment that they have been blessed to become stewards of...not "obviously wanting to build something there". It amazes me how easily people choose to think the worst of a situation and are ready to jump on a band wagon to justify a cause.

Serious? - 2009-02-05 19:38:08

Did you read the same article I did? It said "The native cedars that once dominated the peat bogs feeding local rivers were decimated by development and the stormwater that deposited silt into the sandy, absorbent bottomland." and "Now the channel is incised stormwater," That is a direct result of over development and "pier laden communities". Amazingly the tree wasn't rare 40 years ago ...... Without a doubt someone will want to build something there.

Rare Trees Found In Bog - 2009-02-05 14:50:39

It is ironic how this species of tree apparently continues to thrive among pier laden communities such as those along Yantz Creek and others in Severna Park. Is this not a direct contradiction of the opposition's claim to the pier applications along Sullivan' Cove? Go figure.
