Rain garden project grows, inspires at AACC

When volunteering at an event a few weeks ago, Eileen Catte got a bit down-in-the-dumps hearing from pessimistic people who stopped by the table she was manning for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Joshua McKerrow — The Capital Anne Arundel Community College student Eileen Catte of Laurel proposed installing one rain garden at the Arnold campus to soak up and filter stormwater. Her project grew to include five rain gardens, paid for largely with a grant from the nonprofit Chesapeake Bay Trust.

They were convinced that the Chesapeake Bay might never be brought back to a healthy, vibrant state.

To counteract those negative thoughts, Catte only has to look as far as the road circling Anne Arundel Community College, where she's a business major. For an honors biology project, Catte led an effort to design and install five rain gardens that beautify the campus and soak up harmful stormwater.
