Some residents have noticed swarms of brown bugs collecting on the sunny side of their houses of late and wondered what plague has come upon us.
Well, they are stink bugs. Brown marmorated stink bugs, to be precise. And they won't generally smell unless you mess with them.
The worst thing about them for homeowners, other than the concern they arouse, is the foul odor they emit when disturbed, squished or otherwise dispatched.
But the agricultural community is worried the pests could become a major problem, especially in soybean fields.

These are an introduced type of stink bug and they have only been here a few years. Get your facts before you give the author such a hard time.

Stink bugs - 2009-10-05 09:16:45
This story refers specifically to the Brown marmorated stink bug. A fact sheet from the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences confirms that this particular bug has been in the U.S. since the 1990s: http://bit.ly/qJwZ7. There are similar bugs commonly called "stink" or "shield" bugs.

Stink Bugs - 2009-10-05 08:30:09
One would think that after the political mess the city was just in the Capital would go to great lengths to make sure all there stories are fact but it seems that is not the case. these stink bugs have been in the country for much longer then 40 years. My 87 year old mother would talk about them when she was a child growing up in BayRidge. It seems that the writers and editor at the Capital are incapeable of doing a good job much less a great job as jurnalist. i for one would like to see the writers and editor replaced with people who just maybe could report the truth.

Stink bugs have been around for as long as I can remember. I'm 41, so I know they've been here for way longer than 13 years. Why do I even read this rag?

These bugs have been in the U.S. for well over 40 years. I remember them well in southern Virginia circa 1966.
Don't believe half of what you read in the papers.
