The federal government plans to regulate coal ash, also called fly ash.
It's the same substance that contaminated drinking water wells in Gambrills, near the site of an old surface mine that was filled in with coal ash.
"I'm glad they have come forward and recognized this is a national issue that must be addressed," said County Executive John R. Leopold, who supports tougher rules.
