But the Chesapeake Bay's blue crab population is closer to the brink than ever - leading to crabbing restrictions and an intense scrutiny of the crab population. Some people are shying away from eating local crabs.

"It was a very big concern last year and it will be a concern this year," said Noreen Eberly, director of the state's Seafood Marketing and Aquaculture Development Office. It's her job to convince Marylanders that it's OK to...

Economics 101 - 2009-05-28 17:07:13

If there is a glut of crabs in the region, shouldn't the cost of crabs drop below $200 a bushel? The market is self-correcting. Yet many watermen, including their lobbying arm, have maintained for years that the crab population is not in danger. So why has the cost of crabs outpaced inflation and gas prices? Is it the watermen setting prices, or is it price-gouging on the part of outlets such as Annapolis Seafood?

Crab Population - 2009-05-28 16:52:40

I guess I am missing something. The figures cited in this article do not support the commonly held belief that the blue crab population in the Bay is in danger. From what I read, experts believe that the Bay needs about 200 million adult crabs to ensure a sustainable population. Apparently, these same experts say that the population grew to 243 million adult crabs this past winter. Where is the problem and why are so many "naturalists" calling for restrictions on this year's harvest? Can't they understand the number of crabs now in the Bay reflects a major turnaround, inspite of "poor water quality" and the depletion of grass fields. Let's declare victory and move on!
