We've had a love-hate relationship with amarone, the jewel of the Veneto region of northeast Italy. In its worst form, amarones can be overly raisiny, alcoholic and lacking in balance. Made well, though, and they are the elixir of Italian wine.
Our vacillating impression of amarone turned positive when - at the suggestion of Raymond Lubrano of the Italian Market - we tasted four wines from Nicolis, a small family-owned producer in the heart of Valpolicella's classico district. Each of the wines we tasted showed the balance and richness that make amarone so extraordinary.
