Underground flooding zaps power downtown

Underground flooding led to a manhole cover explosion and power outage in downtown Annapolis during peak business hours Friday night.

Fire officials said the problems started around 6:30 p.m., when an underground electrical fire blew a manhole cover out of the ground near 85 West St.

As a result, 904 customers were without power, said Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. spokesman Angela Waters.

About 884 of those customers had their electricity restored by 7:40, but the other 20 - mostly businesses -...
